Other Structures

Protecting More Than Just Your House

  • How Much Coverage Do You Get?

Typically, Other Structures coverage is 10% of your dwelling coverage. For example, if your home is insured for $300,000, you’ll have $30,000 of coverage for other structures by default. You can increase this limit if you have more valuable structures on your property.

  • Important Notes:

    –  Business-use structures(like a detached garage converted into a home office) may not be covered unless declared and endorsed.

    –  Rented-out structures: might require special consideration.

    –  Damage from floods or earthquakes: is excluded unless those coverages are purchased separately.

  • What’s Covered?

If a covered peril (such as fire, lightning, wind, hail, or vandalism) damages your detached garage or tool shed, your Other Structures coverage kicks in to pay for the repairs or rebuild—up to your policy limits.

  • Protecting More Than Just Your House

Your home insurance policy doesn’t just cover the main dwelling—it also protects other permanent structures on your property. Other Structures Coverage ensures that buildings and features separate from your home are financially protected from covered damages.

  • What Are “Other Structures”?

Other Structures refer to buildings or features not physically attached to your main house. These may include:

    –  Detached Garages

    –  Sheds or Workshops

    –  Fences or Gates

    –  Swimming Pools

    –  Gazebos, Barns, or Carports

    –  Pergolas or Outdoor Kitchens

  • Why It’s Important

Even if your main home is untouched, a storm or accident can destroy costly additions like a fence or garage. Without proper coverage, repairing or replacing those outbuildings could come out of your pocket.
